Photodynamic Therapy (PDT

What is PhotoDynamic Therapy?

A treatment in which levulan (5-aminollevulinic acid or ALA) is applied to the skin then activated with a specific wavelength of light.

What results will I see?

PhotoDynamic Therapy treatments reverse sun damaged skin, uneven pigmentation and rough skin patches as well as remove sun damaged precancerous spots called actinic keratoses. PDT treatments also have the unique ability to minimize pores and reduce oil glands effectively treating stubborn acne. Treatments can be done on the face and body.

How many treatments do I need?

Three to five treatments spaced about four weeks apart are recommended for maximum results.

How do I look after the treatment?

After the treatment the skin may appear flushed, slightly swollen and brown spots may be darker. This will decrease over the next several days. Patients may resume normal activities immediately. However, patients must avoid all bright light sources and minimize direct sun exposure for 48 hours after the treatment to lessen these reactions.
